Description
Gladys and Charles Mumford, an Arts and Crafts carnelian set silver brooch, Falmouth, circa 1960, unmarked, the circular carnelian measures approximately 10 mm in diameter, the brooch overall 3.3 cm square (Ref S+767)
The carnelian has small concave dots to the surface which would suggest this has been repurposed by the Mumford’s from a silver sewing thimble which were sometimes set to the top with carnelians decorated in this manner. Furthermore it would have been from a small sized thimble or child’s thimble. Possibly utilised as part of a commission?
